The UK Kids’ Comedy Festival, a part of the renowned Leicester Comedy Festival organized by The Big Difference Company, sought an innovative way to engage their young audience. To meet this goal, they envisioned an interactive WebAR game that would captivate children and enhance the festival experience. Our digital design agency, Reflection, was entrusted with the task of bringing this vision to life.

Concept and Objectives of the WebAR Game

The primary objective was to create a WebAR game named “Laughter Pop” that would be accessible and engaging for children attending the festival. By leveraging WebAR technology, we aimed to create a seamless and interactive experience. One that would not only entertain but also encourage children to participate actively in the festival’s activities.

How It Works

Laughter Pop was designed to be easily accessible through a simple QR code scan. These QR codes were strategically placed on posters around Leicester. Upon scanning, the WebAR game would utilise the device’s camera to create an immersive augmented reality experience. Children could place a “Laughter Canister” in the real world using AR. This would cause stylized emojis to rain down. The objective was to collect the falling emojis, each with funny sound effects. This would fill the laughter canister and trigger a delightful giggle. Additionally, a special golden egg emoji offered a chance to enter a prize draw for festival tickets, adding an extra layer of excitement and incentive for participation.

WebAR Game Development and Design

Our in-house team at Reflection handled the entire development process of the WebAR game. This included both the backend functionality and the frontend user interface (UI). We ensured that the game was not only functional but also engaging and user-friendly for children.

UI Design and Illustration

The UI design of Laughter Pop was crafted to align with the illustrated posters created for the Kids Comedy Festival, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing user experience. Our design team illustrated 15 unique emojis and developed a game logo that resonated with the festival’s theme and aesthetic. This attention to detail helped create a seamless transition from the physical posters to the digital game, enhancing user engagement and enjoyment.

Beyond developing the WebAR game, we provided additional support by creating marketing graphics for The Big Difference Company and the UK Kids’ Comedy Festival’s social media channels. These graphics were designed to generate buzz and encourage festival-goers to participate in the Laughter Pop game. The cohesive visual style across all marketing materials helped reinforce brand recognition and engagement.

Positive Reception and Feedback

Laughter Pop received an overwhelmingly positive response from both the children and their parents. The interactive and playful nature of the WebAR game made it a hit at the festival, leading to many entries in the prize draw and a significant increase in overall engagement.
